What is a Sleep Study?

A sleep study is a diagnostic test designed to monitor and record body functions during sleep, helping to identify sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, and narcolepsy.

What We Measure

During the study, the following body functions are monitored overnight:

  • Brain activity (EEG) to assess sleep stages and patterns
  • Breathing and airflow to detect pauses or obstructions
  • Heart rate and rhythm
  • Oxygen levels in the blood
  • Body movements to evaluate restlessness or disruptions.

What to Expect

Our experienced nursing team will guide you through the process, including:

  • Fitting the monitoring equipment at the clinic and explaining how it works
  • Providing clear instructions on how to wear the equipment overnight at home
  • Ensuring you are comfortable and confident using the device to collect accurate data

The results are then analysed and interpreted by a sleep physician, providing valuable information for diagnosing sleep disorders and guiding treatment plans.

Preparation for Your Sleep Study

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol in the evening prior to the study
  • Maintain a normal sleep routine as much as possible
  • Bring comfortable sleepwear and any items needed for your usual bedtime routine
  • Continue your regular medications unless otherwise advised by your clinician

Follow-Up

After the study, your results will be reviewed by the doctor, who will provide clear explanations and recommendations for any further investigation or treatment options.
